It is scary how one can be successful or be headed for success today and be no more the next day. Few weeks ago, a woman made waves on social media when she created the song “OBANILABANTU”. People became interested in the song, especially when they found out that it was an older woman that had created a song that they could sing along to.
A woman by the name of Olpha Selepe, popularly known by the name Geesixfive, and an owner of the song OBANILABANTU passed away too early, from when her career started booming. She is said to have passed on due to Covid-19, barely two days after contracting the virus.
Her niece, by the name of Sbu Mpungose made this announcement early Wednesday morning. This is what she posted:
“My beloved aunt, MumNcane who many of you know as #GeeSixFive is no more. She displayed leadership throughout her life, was the epitome of fearlessness & inspired many with her single #ObaniLababantu. Mthiya, Shandu kaNdaba, Sontshikazi. #RIPGeeSixFive“,Sbu Mpungose said.

Olpha Selepe, who was also known as Geesixfive passed away at the age of sixty five (65). She had retired as a teacher back in March and she was on her journey of obtaining a PHD in Philosophy at the University of Kwazulu Natal.
Her family issued out a media statement. In the Media statement, it was revealed that she passed away on the 9th of December 2020. “South Africans were introduced to her as the musician Geesixfive who penned and performed the hit song Obanulabantu”, the statement said.
She had retired as a teacher and she had a career as a primary school principal and she later taught at TVET College in Pietermaritzburg and she also taught in the UK. She completed her Masters degree at the age of 63. She left behind three children, a number of grandchildren, sister, nieces and nephews.
