Geoff Makhubo, Mayor of Johannesburg, has lost his life due to Covid-19.

Eunice Mgcina, a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, has been appointed acting mayor.
Makhubo died on Friday morning, according to Mgcina.
“We had thought Makubo would be able to fight the virus, return to work, and lead the City in the face of this pandemic that has ravaged lives and livelihoods.” Unfortunately, it was not to be.
“Our greatest condolences go out to his wife, daughters, mother, and the rest of his family, friends, and comrades,” Mgcina added. “The family has requested quiet and space as they absorb the terrible death of one of their own.”
Makhubo’s death has grieved the ANC in Johannesburg, according to spokesperson Sasa Manganye.
“We are shattered as an organisation. We didn’t expect that Makhubo’s admission will lead to us losing him. He was a strong man and believed he would fight and win the battle. He was not only the mayor of the ANC. He was a friend to many of us in the ANC and the opposition party.
“He has been on the ground ensuring that the City of Johannesburg residents comply with the regulations,” Manganye said.
